Product Description
This classic guide to nutrition has helped put the balance in balanced diets since 1937. Now completely updated for the Seventeenth Edition, this bestseller continues to fulfill its purpose, to supply authoritative data on the nutritional value of foods in a form for quick and easy reference. The book’s main table reflects the current food supply — listing more than 8,500 common foods — and contains data on the nutritional content of foods, organized by food groups. Supplementary tables define the content of lesser known foods. Each food entry is thoroughly evaluated to include calorie content, weight, water, protein, fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, dietary fiber and major vitamins and minerals. Brand names and the general foods that typify today’s eating habits are covered; the latest information on fiber and monounsaturated fat content is addressed; and a bibliography of sources for current food composition data is provided. New in the Seventeenth Edition: a comprehensive listing of sugars has been added to the main table.

I never received this book that was ordered from Powells Books in Portland Oregon. I learned a few hours later, from Powells, that it had been sold by the time I placed my order. Please remove this order from your files. I have several e-mails from Amazon referring to a book that was not available and that I have never received.

This book was purchased to be used by an intelligent person to try to ascertain the amount of fiber she was eating each day. This book is so detailed and not user friendly that it is a discouragement. I would not have this book if someone gave it to me.

Good luck trying to find anything in this stupid book. I spent my day trying to find squash until I gave up.

I was stunned at how this book was not written for the general public, it seems more a dissertation, for academic credit. I give it one star only for the beautiful pictures on the cover, which is misleading. There were not many pictures in the book itself. I feel that I wasted my money on this and would recommend it to no one. The font used is so small, it is hard to read. It breaks down the food to the chemical level, which is not really the information I want or need.

This book has good information, however, is not very useful for vegetarians or people who use frozen meals. There have been several food items that I looked up and could not find. It has more detail than the average person needs.
